Plato Epistemology Essay ? Plato was born in Athens in 428/27 BCE, one year after death of Pericles. ? His father traced his lineage to the old kings of Athens and before them to the god Posiedon. ? His, mother Perictione, was the sister of Chramides and the cousin of Critias. ? In such a family atmosphere, Plato learned much about public life and developed at an early age a sense of responsibility for public political service. ? Around 387 BCE, when he was about 40 yrs. When we move from believing to thinking, we move from the visible world to the intelligible world and from the realm of opinion to the realm of knowledge Perfect Intelligence ? To have a perfect knowledge would require that we grasp the relation of everything to everything else-that we see the unity of the whole of reality. Plato Summary Statement: â€Å"Now you may take, a corresponding to the four sections, these four states of mind: intelligence for the highest, thinking for the second, belief for the third and for the last imagining. These you may arrange as the terms in a proportion, assigning to each a degree of clearness and certainty, corresponding to the measure in which their object possess truth and reality†. THEORY OF FORMS ? Plato’s theory of the Forms is his most significant philosophical contribution. ? There are atleast five questions that we might ask about the forms: What are the forms? ? In his Symposium Plato states that we normally grasp beauty first of all in a particular object or person. But having discovered beauty in his limited form, we soon â€Å"perceive that the beauty of one form is akin to another†, and so we move from the beauty of a particular body to the recognition that beauty† in every form is one the same†. Where do the forms Exist? ? Plato’s clearest suggestion on this problem is that the Forms are â€Å"separate† from concrete things, that they exist â€Å" apart from the things we see. What Is the Relation of Forms to Each other? ? A Form can be related to a thing in three ways: o The Form is the cause of the essence of a thing. o A thing may be said to participate in a form. o A thing may be said to imitate or copy a form. What is the Relation of forms to each other? ? Plato says that â€Å"We can have discourse only through the weaving together of Forms. † How do we know the forms? ? Father And Son As related to Absalom and Achitophel Absalom and Achitophel begins in the world of Old Testament history. (l. 1-10) The association between God and David is made through the clever comparison of divine and human fertility. There is some irony in seeing God's abundant creation reflected in the king's sexual extravagances, but the irony doesn't reduce the status of the king. It serves, at the beginning of the poem, to separate the person of the king from the office of the king. The opening scenes emphasize David as an indulgent father, not as head of the country. David's pleasure in Absalom parallels God's attitude toward Adam in the Garden. All of Absalom's motions are accompanied with grace, And paradise was opened in his face. With secret joy indulgent David viewed His youthful image in his son renewed: To all his wishes nothing he denied; And made the charming Annabel his bride. (l. 29-34) The easy going nature of Absalom, put together with the specific reference to paradise, help establish him as the figure from Eden that will be seen again in the temptation. The characterization of David emphasizes a combination of divine and human paternity. Like God, David takes great joy in his creation; like God, he supplies Absalom with a worthwhile bride. This serious presentation of David in his fatherly joy and indulgence, as compared to the divine model, cannot be taken as criticism of the king. It strengthens the casual relationship between God and David established at the opening of the poem. When attention is called to indulgence or weakness in David's character, it is in a context that shows David's indulgence to be a reflection of his paternal, rather than kingly, capacity: What faults he had (for whom from faults if free?) Alice Silveira, my mother has had three pregnancies. Her eldest is a boy, who is almost twenty-three, her middle child is a girl, who is nineteen, and her youngest boy is seventeen. I will be discussing her last pregnancy, which was with my brother, Izake, the now seventeen-year-old. During this pregnancy, she had numerous complications and she believed that it was far from a typical, â€Å"healthy† pregnancy. One day while washing the dishes, she suddenly stopped and had the urge to eat green fruit. She lived in Gustine at the time and she knew her neighbor next door had either a peach or nectarine fruit tree in the yard. The fruit on his tree hadn’t yet matured and it was underdeveloped, green in color. She went outside, looked around, made sure no one was around to witness and grabbed the smallest piece of fruit. She took the fruit, which was mostly all pit, off the branch of her neighbor’s tree and then ran back into the house. Nibbling on this piece of fruit left her with such a satisfied feeling. It then occurred to her that she might be pregnant, which led her to grab the phone and call her husband to retell what she had just done. The next day, she went out and bought a home pregnancy test, which confirmed her suspicions that she was indeed pregnant. Then, a doctor appointment was scheduled and through an ultrasound, they gave her the same positive result.
